Lecture 11 - Homework - Final development

Colour Scheme - Poster 2 - Refinement:

Now after seeing my poster like this I believe the red colour I did try with my poster is actually more successful and I believe it stands out more as a poster design.

The red is slightly harder to read, but I believe the poster really has much more impact as it is brighter. The key words in red also show the importance of this message and the main words link to the call to action of the hashtag.

FINAL POSTERS:

These two posters I am happy with, they both go cohesively with one another saying the same idea, but have different visual styles. They both express the idea of New Zealand's education system giving people an equal opportunity at getting a good education and learning to read compared to the rest of the world.
The left poster is predominantly photographic with the use of overlays and illustrative eyes to add texture and depth to the design, eyes are commonly seen as a representation of literacy, but in the way I have manipulated them I believe they look more to be the way you read and how you use your eyes to see and learn and your eyes are the things which make direct contact with the pages.
My second poster uses threshold techniques to turn images into something similar to drawings, with the use of the children in school uniforms which appear to be hand drawn enforcing the idea of learning and drawing being a convention of literacy. The use of happy children relates to Pathos as you react and feel as though these children from different backgrounds have equal opportunities at a good education in New Zealand.

These posters have developed far and I believe now I am happy with the final products I will take them to the printers.

Lecture 10 - Homework - Final developments

Slight type developments - Poster 1:

Slight type developments - Poster 2:

Trying the different colour ideas and seeing how this colour looks for this design. I feel as though the contrast is too strong and not successful.

Final two to take into final class critique Monday:

These final two posters look much more refined and clear. They have better type and align nicely to the grids I have placed.

I hope my critique on Monday goes really well and I believe these are looking well resolved now.

Lecture 9 - Homework - Developing two concepts towards a resolved final

Poster 1 -

Developments:

I have read the wording here and similar to what was discussed in one of my early critiques this says that we need this, not that we have it and that we want to celebrate this fact.
I will re-word this. It works with the designs of the children wearing school uniform an also the use of the colour really gives the poster a child like feel, even as if the children were drawn onto the page. The colours being really bold and bright means my poster will really stand out against other posters.

Better wording:

The use of Logos is most importance when you read the factual information which convinces viewers that New Zealand is a good place with a good education system.
There is also a small use of Pathos as you see the children and react the the message about them, but the majority of this argument in this poster is Logos.

Looking at all the colour schemes and colour combinations - continuing developing layout

I believe the best colour combination is either the orange or the dark blue previously used, these posters stand out over the others and the words really come forward in those ideas.

Selected development of poster 1:

This poster development is much more advanced than the dull concept I had in class, the colours are stronger and the use of the uniforms with school bags ties the theme down to school children specifically, addressing what I was critiqued about with the children looking like a diversity advertisement.
The use of the large text over the complimentary coloured background really makes an impact and expresses through the ideas of us celebrating New Zealand's education system.
The layout works nicely and there is a large amount of negative space between the text and the illustrations.
The ideas surrounding ihi wehi and the techniques this is working are the same as previous.

Poster 2 -

Developments:

This second development I have used Matt's critique ideas and really developed the eyes to be different and look more interesting, I think with the use of the overlaying illustrations and the different textures it represents education more than sight or blind.

The Ihi of this poster is the eyes drawing viewers in with the strong words you can read sparking Wehi a reaction of curiosity wondering and thinking what does this poster mean and what is it about.

Reflection on both posters:

The colour schemes of my two posters also go together well, they are two very different concepts of different styles but together they have the same colour - scheme linking them on another level to just the same theme.

Lecture 6 - Homework - Topic Statements

Topic statements and further research:

Statement/Counter Statement and Action/Message -

http://www.data.unicef.org/education/primary.html

Statement: 1 in 10 children will not attend school.

Counter Statement: 10 out of 10 New Zealand children must attend school.

Action/Message: Compulsory education for all Kiwi kids. Our privileges are significant.

Statement: Everyone has a right to education.

Counter Statement: In New Zealand it's more than a right, it's a requirement.

Action/Message: Equal access to free state education for all children.

Statement: 17% of the world's population is illiterate.

Counter Statement: Under 1% of New Zealand's population is.

Action/Message: State education gives free equal access to educational rights.

Statement: 1/4 of the world requires students to fund their own high-school education.

Counter Statement: No high-school student's in New Zealand have to pay for their own education.

Action/Message: Equal access to schooling no-matter your situation.

I also looked into medical rights, New Zealand have free dental care for all children/teenagers under the age of 18, free prescription medicine for all under 13's and accident cover for everyone.
Equity in the New Zealand health system is ranked 2nd in the world - according to research conducted by the commonwealth fund.

To find some statements which counter these ideas are difficult.

Imagery presidents to counter these ideas:

Looking at symbols of education, free, rights etc.

The colour schemes in these ideas are really interesting, and some of the symbols and ideas that have come through these could be useful with my designs and ways to really communicate information to the target audience. I will now go back and sketch some ideas surrounding the presidents and the new statements I have developed for further conceptual ideas.

Sketching ideas and concepts surrounding statements/facts and ideas:

Rough sketches thinking around the facts and Statement 1 - 1 in 10 children or 10%...

Developing concept sketches to develop further... With some analysis notes:

From here I will develop these four ideas into illustrator and see how they look nicely presented, then I will take these ideas to class and get some feedback as to their direction and ideas.
